Raspberry leaf which is also known as Rubus Idaeus is a red-fruited species of the genus Rubus and, is native to Europe and northern Asia.

The flowers of the red raspberry are produced in late spring and, the fruit is produced during summer and early autumn which are edible with a sweet and sour taste. The leaves of the red raspberry are filled with nutrients and are commonly used as herbal tea or for medicinal uses. Red raspberry leaf has been used for centuries for health especially for women’s health and to induce labour during pregnancy. Red raspberry leaf has been found to have health benefits including:

  • It contains a good source of nutrients and antioxidants: red raspberry leaf is rich in vitamins and minerals such as different B vitamins, vitamin C and minerals such as potassium, magnesium, zinc, phosphorus and iron. Red raspberry leaf is also known for its antioxidant property as it contains polyphenols (for example; tannins and flavonoids) which act as antioxidants; antioxidants are beneficial in protecting cells in the body from damage.
  • It is beneficial for women’s health: the leaves of red raspberry have been found to help relieve premenstrual symptoms (PMS) such as cramping in the abdominal area, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Red raspberry leaves contain the chemical compound known as fragarine which has the action of toning and tightening muscles in the pelvic area; this may reduce cramps during menstruation due to the spasms of these muscles. 

It has been used in pregnancy: red raspberry leaf has been commonly used in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. It has also been used in the first trimester by women to help with nausea and vomiting. Furthermore, it has also been used to 

  • strengthen the uterus, improve the outcome of labour and prevent excessive bleeding post labour. 

Although, red raspberry leaf has great benefits for women’s health it does have side effects. Red raspberry leaf tea may have laxative properties causing loose stools in some people and may also have a mild diuretic effect. Therefore, it is important to consult with your general practitioner or Chinese medicine practitioner before consuming this herb to get the best advice as possible and for the safety of your health.
